WATER: JUNE 25, 2022 EARTH: OCTOBER 22, 2022 AIR: FEB 4, 2023 FIRE: MAY 6. 2023 Our inherent connection to all things becomes clear when sitting quietly in meditation. In present moment awareness, the illusion of separateness falls away. We are reminded that we embody water, earth, air, and fire. In this four-part series, each season we will focus on one element and consider how it is held and expressed in the body and mind. We continue the Sitting with the Four Great Elements series in February with the element of AIR. In most parts of the northern hemisphere, Winter is a time for rest and reflection. With short days and long nights, we likely spend more time than usual indoors resting and staying warm. It is a necessary fallow time. Winter is a season perfect for meditation and contemplation; a time to practice accepting things as they are and loosening any attachment to how we want things to be. Through meditation practice, we cultivate equanimity and let go of resistance and attachment. In an unpredictable world, these are very useful skills to refine. In our afternoon workshop, we will explore what it means to be at peace with things and how to manifest joy. We will look at the air element as a metaphor for our happiness and how air shows up in these bodies we occupy. This workshop will be an opportunity for rest, quiet contemplation, and active curiosity. Roy Remer was the staff meditation teacher at Mountain Yoga for four years and is Executive Director of the Zen Hospice Project. He is a practitioner at the San Francisco Zen Center, and has received the precepts in lay ordination in the Soto Zen lineage. His teaching is fueled by a passionate personal investigation and desire to share how the ancient practices of Zen can improve our present lives.
