Petals unfurl to reveal undying compassion. The soft light of dawn illuminates the infinite potential of nature. A closed gate transforms into a golden arch through which creative energies pour. Wings of wisdom fly through the cosmos, offering clear awareness to all beings everywhere...
These images are from the sacred chants of twelfth-century mystic Hildegard von Bingen – visionary, healer, musician, wise woman, and spiritual conscience to the patriarchy of her time. Singing her songs stirs the spirit and sets the body ringing with a resonance that reminds us who we really are. In one of her visions, Hildegard describes the human body as a singing pipe. “Divine breath moves through these pipes,” she tells us, “making music that can be heard in every corner of the universe.”
Hildegard’s music is for everyone to sing. No musical training or prior experience required. Devi will guide us in experiencing this form of sacred chant the same way Hildegard herself shared it with the women and men who sang with her, in a gentle, nourishing process of listening and singing “through the ear to the heart.”
Devi Mathieu sings medieval and contemporary music in the USA and Europe. She offers vocal coaching and helps free the voices of those who think or have been told they cannot or should not sing. In addition to performing as a soloist in many concert offerings of Hildegard von Bingen’s music, Devi has taught Hildegard’s music, using the medieval oral tradition, for 15 years. For information about regularly scheduled Through the Ear to the Heart gatherings in northern California, visit Numina Center for Spirituality and the Arts, www.numinacenter.org.
Devi regularly collaborates with her husband, composer, author, and pianist William Allaudin (W.A.) Mathieu. She is also a science writer who enjoys delving into the mysteries of living organisms, ecology, subatomic physics, and cosmology. She is committed to exploring the common roots from which all spiritual traditions arise, and to bringing this commonality into contemporary consciousness through song. A student and practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism, American Sufism, and Christian mysticism for more than 30 years, her studies also embrace Judaism, native Middle Eastern traditions, and Eastern European song and dance traditions.
