SET YOURSELF UP FOR SUCCESS
DOING YOGA: ISSUE 1
by Bett Bollhoefer

"For the prevention of obstacles,
one truth should be practiced constantly."

~ YOGA SUTRAS: 1.32

When I have a regular yoga practice I feel empowered.  Yoga supports all else that is important to me in my life, it helps me feel set up for success in everything I do. The struggle many have is to create and maintain regularity in their practice.

In James Clear’s book
Atomic Habits, he points out how small, consistent changes create huge impacts in your life. You can set yourself up for success in your yoga by deliberately creating your yoga habit. I love using my calendar as a tool for personal accountability to help me stick with my yoga practice. When I put yoga on my calendar the decision-making and excuses disappear.

Baxter Bell, MD, co-author of the book Yoga for Healthy Aging, recommends  front loading your day with wellness activities written in your calendar, like your daily yoga practice, taking a walk, a 10 minute meditation break. The earlier in the day you make these commitments, the more likely they are to get done and start to form a routine that gets easier with time. It’s a practice Baxter uses himself when prioritizing wellness activities and anything else he wants to do more consistently.

If you work during the day, try to do your wellness activities as soon you leave work  while you still have a little enthusiasm and energy to devote to your life outside of work!

PRACTICE
Practice yoga in a class or on your own. Afterwards, sit down with your journal. Write down a recent situation where you were planning to take care of yourself, but it didn’t happen. Notice how this makes you feel. How could you have changed the situation? What can you do next time instead?
