This past year has been a time of uncertainty, greatly accentuating our sense of physical vulnerability. Many of us are experiencing altered relationships with our own bodies and the bodies of others. In this workshop we will use writing, asana, breath and rhythm to face and transform fear and vulnerability, opening to the possibilities of connection and inspiration. We’ll use writing prompts and free writing to put feeling to words and words to paper, as well as movement practice to transform the way we feel in and about our human bodies.

NINA SCHNALL  teaches  writing workshops informed by 20 years of writing and yoga practice as well as dance. As a young anthropologist in Haiti, she discovered dance as a key to joy. As a cancer survivor, she has used these tools to recover, heal and return to life. Nina has a Masters degree in Cultural Anthropology from UCSC and MFA in Writing and Consciousness from CIIS.

Melting polar ice caps, devastating forest fires, flooding, drought, species on the verge of extinction: we are inundated every day with information about how our planet is suffering from climate change.

We need ways to address this eco-grief, to acknowledge and express our deep feelings of loss, and to share this with others. This workshop will give us a safe space to do just that.

Using the Amherst Writers and Artists method (AWA)—free writing and voluntarily sharing our work out loud—we'll explore this grief in the written word, discover coping strategies, find inspiration in the heroic work of others, and map our way forward in a rapidly changing world.

CHRISTOPHER DE LORENZO is the author of the memoir cookbook, Kitchen Inheritance, and has published poetry and personal essays in various literary journals. He has led writing workshops in the Bay Area since 1999, and writing retreats in Hawaii, Mexico, Italy, and France. He currently resides in San Francisco, where he teaches at USF.
